Phoebe Philo has returned, and it’s time to emulate the wealthy hedge fund wives with a penchant for artsy, money-losing endeavors. Clad in outrageously expensive viscose and zippered pants that make us question the existence of zippers or pants themselves, we can revel in Philo’s ready-to-wear that has ignited the fashion world. Amy Odell aptly describes her handbags as “lacking hardware, including feet (so, you know, look out for floors), and, like so many things in life, closure.” Although the silhouettes leave much to be desired, the colors are noteworthy. Black, oxblood, and white dominate the Gig bag, while the XL Cabas showcases black, chocolate brown, and toffee. The Small Kit Cabas offers black and chocolate brown options. Notably, black is a constant, safe, versatile, and flattering color. Yet, as we approach fall, I have decided to shun the ubiquity of black bags. Allow me to persuade you to do the same.

The classic black bag is akin to the little black dress – a true wardrobe staple. Its understated cousin is the logo-less black tote, an ample bag ideal for carrying laptops and lunch. Similarly, the black nylon rucksack appeals to teenagers who dream of owning a black Chanel Flap bag. However, despite being considered the absence of light, black is a surprisingly versatile color. It can be dressed up or down, stand out, and blend in with any outfit. Its practicality makes it the ideal default option, ensuring you’re always ready without fear of looking out of place. Given the enduring popularity of black, the pieces from Philo’s collection sold out quickly. Nonetheless, I have found it increasingly challenging to incorporate black into my wardrobe, especially for everyday wear. For casual occasions, the severity of a black purse overshadows my otherwise colorful closet. Additionally, the prevalence of monochromatic outfits has further discouraged me from opting for black. Consequently, I have come to appreciate non-black neutrals such as navy and oxblood, which seamlessly integrate into my existing wardrobe without blending in with the multitude of black handbags in the market. As we transition towards a more conscious consumerism, the allure of a black purse, minimalist and practical, remains undeniable. Yet, it’s time to consider other neutrals, such as navy, oxblood, beige, cognac, tan, jewel green, purple, and burgundy. While black remains an unparalleled classic, a splash of color can offer a refreshing change. So, let’s dare to embrace non-black neutrals and inject a pop of color into our wardrobes.
