A decade ago, while I was just kicking off my role at PurseBlog, awards show season was always a hectic period for the whole team. Post awards night, like the Golden Globes and Oscars, we’d be bombarded with emails from luxury brands PR teams announcing VIP outfits. This would involve spending hours searching the web for links to countless clutches or playing detective, scrutinizing attendee’s social media shares to spot the brand of an unknown sparkly pouch.
While I still wake up to a flood of emails every year, there has been a noticeable decrease in the number of outfits featuring handheld mini bags. In fact, I commenced my task this year and had to go through at least 15 emails before I finally stumbled upon one with a bag in it. Some of the most renowned luxury brands, including Gucci, Miu Miu, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, dressed celebs for the event. Nonetheless, the bags were conspicuously absent.
So, what gives?
Ironically, one of the signature handbag trends of the early 2020s was (and still is) oversized pouches and plush carryalls meant to be clutched. Although handheld bags aren’t going out of style, evening clutches have ceased to be the mainstays they were before.
It’s clear that things have evolved in recent years. We no longer switch our giant daily haulers for a night out in bandage skirts, peplum tops, and a “going out” clutch. This shift can be attributed to the increasing popularity of mini and micro bags that are now used from daytime through to evening. And that’s just smarter.
While it’s improbable that the evening clutch as we know it will fade into obscurity, the contents of our wedding day, parties, and fancy events bag are undoubtedly changing. In my case, I’d much rather carry a Gucci Mini Jackie adorned with crystals or a sequined Fendi Baguette. The alternative feels quite dated.
