With each year comes a multitude of fresh handbag releases, and as we near the end of 2023, let’s talk about some of the most notable drops of the year. From designs inspired by the past to reimagined versions of popular styles, as well as completely new creations, each one listed holds its own significance. This year brought about changes at some major fashion houses, such as Gucci and Burberry, and this list showcases debuts from brands currently in transitional periods. Introducing a new bag line can make or break a designer’s year, which is why we pay attention to the most buzzworthy releases. A new bag launch has the potential to completely change a brand’s desirability or elevate an already sought-after brand. Take a look at our five picks below (in no particular order!), and let us know if you have been able to get your hands on any of these bags.

Loewe Puzzle Fold Tote
This fall marked a decade under Jonathan Anderson’s leadership at Loewe, and an entirely new iteration of his design debut for the Spanish-founded Design House was released this year. The Puzzle Fold Tote emerged as part of the fall pre-collection, launching in July, and it was an instant hit. Fans sung praises for the Puzzle Tote’s stylistic appeal and understated branding, making it perfect for the era of quiet luxury. Its geometric lines and sleek silhouette are meant to stand out while also allowing it to fold up entirely. Under Anderson’s direction, Loewe has steadily climbed to the top among the luxury world’s biggest handbag players.

Chanel “Kelly”
One of the most talked about (and elusive) bags of the year came from Chanel. Clearly inspired by the brand’s archives, the Chanel Nano Shopping Bag was immediately nicknamed the Chanel Kelly due to its overall essence and unmistakable design codes, reminiscent of an iconic bag from the brand’s past. A part of the brand’s Fall/Winter 2023/24 collection, this new release immediately became difficult to track down, appearing on resale sites for more than double its retail cost.

Gucci Horsebit Chain
For a brand that holds a special place in handbag lovers’ hearts, Gucci saw one of the biggest changes in the last decade. With Alessandro Michele’s departure, the Italian House began the year without a Creative Director leading its design direction. His replacement, Sabato De Sarno, released his first collection for Gucci, including the 70th-anniversary celebration of the Horsebit bag, an iconic nod to the brand’s storied archives, designed during the Tom Ford era. This release marks a new era for Gucci, showcasing the brand’s transition with an emphasis on its past.

Bottega Veneta Andiamo
Following his debut last year, Matthiew Blazy has further solidified his vision for Bottega Veneta with the Andiamo, meaning ‘Let’s go’ in Italian. This release showcases the brand’s recognizable Intrecciato weave, offering a hint of elegance paired with functionality, making it a hit among the fashion crowd and celebrities alike.

Burberry Knight Bag
Daniel Lee, known for reviving Bottega Veneta, was also tasked with doing the same for Burberry. This year, under Lee’s direction, we were introduced to an entirely new Burberry, marked by the return of the Burberry Prorsum logo and the debut of a variety of new bags as part of Lee’s inaugural collection for Fall 2023. Among these new releases, the Knight Bag stands out, marking a new era for the British heritage label and making it one to watch this season.
