Hey there! So, I’ve been living the digital nomad life for the past year and a half, and I’ve been all over the world. During my adventures, I’ve figured out what essentials you need to have as a nomad, and I want to share them with you in this post.
We’ll cover everything from tech gear to clothing options, and I’ll even throw in some software recommendations. This guide will make sure you’re productive, safe, and comfortable while working remotely and exploring the world.
Let’s dive into the categories: tech gear, clothing, and bags. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the software and subscriptions section too. It’s time to gear up for your digital nomad journey!
Digital Nomad Tech Gear
First things first, let’s talk about the tech gear that will keep you connected and productive on the road. Of course, you might need to adjust this list based on your specific work needs, but it’s a good starting point:
1. Laptop (An Essential Item on Every Digital Nomad Packing List)
Your laptop is your lifeline as a digital nomad, so invest in a reliable one. Personally, I love my 13-inch MacBook Pro. It’s fast, powerful, and has a fantastic screen for photo editing. But there are other great options out there too.
2. Universal Power Adapter
Don’t forget a universal power adapter. This little gadget ensures you can charge your devices no matter where you are in the world. Get one that works with different types of power outlets, like European, North American, Australian, and UK plugs.
3. Power Bank
A portable power bank is a must-have. It saves you from the frustration of a dead phone battery when you’re on the go. Look for one that’s lightweight and can charge multiple devices at once.
4. Foldable Laptop Stand
Take care of your posture with a foldable laptop stand. It raises your screen to eye level, making you more comfortable during long work sessions. Go for a lightweight one that you can easily carry around.
5. Keyboard and Mouse
Pair your laptop stand with an external keyboard and mouse for ergonomic comfort. You’ll be able to work longer without discomfort. There are options for Apple users like the Magic Keyboard and Mouse, or you can find other affordable combinations too.
6. Portable Wi-Fi Router
Stable and secure internet is essential for remote work. A portable Wi-Fi router creates a private network, giving you a reliable connection. Look for lightweight, compact models with long battery life or the option to plug into a power source.
7. Noise-Canceling Headphones
Block out distractions with noise-canceling headphones. Whether you’re in a busy coffee shop or on a noisy plane, these will help you focus. Choose between over-ear or in-ear styles based on your preference and portability needs.
8. Portable External Hard Drive
Backup your files regularly with a portable external hard drive. Trust me, you don’t want to lose important documents. I recommend the sturdy and durable LaCie Rugged Mini.
9. Kindle – Because Reading should Become a Habit
For bookworms, a Kindle is a game-changer. You can carry a whole library in a compact device. Kindles have adjustable backlighting and long battery life, perfect for reading anywhere.
10. Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Make your temporary home feel homier with a portable Bluetooth speaker. It’s not a necessity, but it’s great for playing your favorite tunes and creating a cozy atmosphere.
11. Smartphone
Almost everyone has a smartphone these days, and while I dislike the obsession with phones in our culture, they are undoubtedly useful, especially for remote workers.
A smartphone helps you stay connected with clients, friends, and family while on the go. It also provides access to helpful apps like Google Maps, translation tools, podcasts, calendars, and productivity apps.
Personally, I have an iPhone 12 Pro, which fulfills all my needs and more. The camera is so good that I often don’t bother carrying my bulky DSLR camera on trips anymore. And there are even better iPhones available now.
No matter which phone you prefer, make sure it’s unlocked, meaning it’s not tied to a specific mobile network. This allows you to buy and use local SIM cards or eSIMs when traveling abroad.
